Family-friendly cycle trips along EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route

Tuesday, October 22, 2019
The EuroVelo 15 - Rhine Cycle Route follows the Rhine and its 1.233 km from its source in the Swiss Alps to its outlet in the Dutch sea. It passes four countries and unique landscapes. Sights and activities for the whole family complete the offer for visitors of one of the largest rivers in Europe.

The “Family tour Lake Constance” (16 km) between Rorschach and Romanshorn in Switzerland is the perfect route to enjoy a relaxed trip with the whole family. Different water sports and other free time activities are offered along the picturesque Lake Constance. Playgrounds, bathing spots, public parks and inviting lakeside promenades await travelers of this region. Located close by is the so-called “meeting place Kellen”, the largest playground in Eastern Switzerland. Kids can climb, slide, swing and relax on ten different play islands. Find out more on the Schweizmobil website!

The German-French circular trails for families „Around the Rhine“ start in Lauterbourg. On the left banks of the Rhine, they lead cyclists through the French Alsace and on the right banks through the German Palatinate region. Divided into two daily stages, these routes (42 and 57 km) are especially suitable for families with older children. Visit the region's website!

The Hessian wine town Rüdesheim is a great starting point for family-friendly cycle trips through the Rheingau. Following the Rhine Cycle Route towards the south, cyclists pass picturesque vineyards and reach Eltville am Rhein after 16 km. With an incline of just 1-2%, this stretch is suited for the whole family. A comfortable alternative for the return trip to Rüdesheim is a train ride. More information here.

A stretch of the Rhine Cycle Route that is particularly family-friendly as it does not run directly next to the main road starts in Rheinhessen: The point of departure for this 15 km trip is in Bingen. It leads through the stunning landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley to Bacharach. A total of nine castles are aligned along the hills. Some can still today be visited, such as Rheinstein Castle. Not far from the starting point of this trip, at the “Park am Mäuseturm”, a large recreation ground with green areas, playgrounds and sports grounds invites cyclists to spend some time. A family-friendly cycling path in the Lower Rhine region leads from Xanten to the amusement park Wunderland Kalkar. Xanten offers many attractions for the whole family, such as the LVR-Archaeological Park Xanten, the LVR-RömerMuseum and the leisure center Xanten. The route then leads along Xanten’s North and South Seas to Kalkar. At the end of this 20 km cycling trip, the Wunderland Kalkar awaits the guests. Find out more!

The 20 km stretch between the Dutch Dordrecht and Kinderdijk is particularly attractive for the whole family. After starting with a short ferry trip in Dordrecht, the cycle route passes Alblasserbos and eventually ends in Kinderdijk. The landscape here is especially characterized by historical windmills, which were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997. The return trip to Dordrecht can be easily organized via “Waterbus” (May through late October). www.kinderdijk.com
