The Ancient Road, also called “Hærvejen", offers many different attractions. Whether you are interested in history or a nature lover, you will find plenty to experience there. The Ancient Road meanders through some of Denmark’s most scenic landscapes and passes some of the nation’s most inspiring prehistoric monuments. Among those, the two mighty burial mounds and the two rune stones erected by kings Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth in the 900s, as well as Jelling's Church, mark the transition from paganism to Christianity in Denmark.
You can hike or bike along the Ancient Road throughout the year but the best time for a holiday there is from 1 May to 1 October. Hiking outside this period is, of course, possible, but the weather is unstable and accommodation offerings are fewer.

Danish Cycling Tourism is a non-profit association of public and private partners. Its main purpose is to develop and promote recreational cycling in Denmark. Since 2016, it has served as the national EuroVelo Coordination Centre for Denmark, and as of 2023, it will host the official online platform for the national cycling routes as well as the EuroVelo routes in the country.

The Ancient Road consists of a few hundred kilometres of hiking and cycling trails that reach from the north to the south of Jutland. Along the way the route leads you very closely past everything one could wish for in the Danish countryside: the sea, the coastline, the heath, the forests and the open landscape as well as some of the most interesting locations of Denmark’s history.
