You enter Greece cycling around Doirani Lake, a unique wetland, where Greece shares borders with the Republic of North Macedonia. First city on the way south, the modern metropolis of Thessaloniki, with its lively cosmopolitan character and, whilst there, do not miss a visit to nearby Mount Athos or the Great Tumulus of Vergina village in Imathia, Central Macedonia, where excavations in 1977 brought to light the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century in Greece. The route follows the east coast and offers superb views of Mount Olympus and Mount Pelion, passing through the city of Volos and the historical cities of Thebes and Chalkis. Finally you enter the Attica Region where the magnificent Acropolis of Athens is worth a visit.
