EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route extended to Austria and Liechtenstein

Tuesday, June 3, 2025
On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) announces the extension of EuroVelo 15 – Rhine Cycle Route to the right bank of the Rhine River, between Trübbach and Lustenau.

This new 62-km cycle route stretch allows for the inclusion of two countries that were not part of EuroVelo 15: Austria and Liechtenstein. Although five other EuroVelo routes cross Austria, the routes were limited to the central and eastern part of the country. The extension of EuroVelo 15 now brings the westernmost province of Vorarlberg onto the map of the European cycle route network.

While EuroVelo 15 has always run close to the Swiss border with Liechtenstein, the Principality of Liechtenstein was never actually crossed by EuroVelo routes. With the route extension announced today, the Rhine Cycle Route now visits Liechtenstein and its capital city of Vaduz, bringing the number of countries crossed by EuroVelo routes to 39.

EuroVelo routes are allowed to run on both sides of a river, and this new stretch is sure to bring a great experience for cycling tourists. The routes are mostly asphalted, well-developed and already included in the respective national cycle route networks. In Liechtenstein, the route follows the regional Liechtensteiner Rheintalroute, marked with number 35. In Vorarlberg, this route stretch is part of the Ill-Rhine Route. Signposting is present all along the new stretch, and includes EuroVelo signage – the number 15 circled by twelve yellow stars on a blue background.

The new track of the Rhine Cycle Route was made possible thanks to the concerted efforts of SwitzerlandMobility, the Swiss National EuroVelo Coordination Centre, which manages the cycle route network in Liechtenstein, the Principality of Liechtenstein and the Austrian province of Vorarlberg. These national and regional institutions see EuroVelo as a drive for tourism in the area southern of Lake Constance and an occasion for continuing to develop cycling for recreational and everyday purposes.
